John Middleton first appeared as an adult and lived in ELIZABETH CITY County (Hampton), VA in the 1710's and 1720's. He migrated to CARTERET County (later ONSLOW County), NC in the early 1730's.
He died in Onslow County, NC in 1744, leaving a valid will dated April 1744 in which he named his wife Sarah and eight children and alluded to a previous wife, the mother of his eldest son. His children settled primarily in DUPLIN, NEW HANOVER, and ONSLOW counties of North Carolina. Descendants continued to live particularly in Duplin County, NC well into the latter half of the twentieth century. Branches of the family migrated to BARNWELL County, SC (about 1800) and to LOWNDES County, AL (about 1838).
